Home Page » English News » JICA ready to fund sewerage system in port cityThe JICA has offered to provide financial and technical support to sewerage system in the port city of Chittagong.Responding to a query Mikio Hataeda, chief representative of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Bangladesh, said that Bangladesh is the fourth largest development partner of Japan in the world.
“We will also extend our support if the government of Bangladesh and Chittagong WASA undertake any project of sewerage in the city of Chittagong,” he said adding he was stunned to learn that the port city has no sewerage system as yet.
Mr. Hataeda was addressing at a reception accorded in his honour by Chittagong WASA at hotel Lord’s Inn in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
The function was presided over by CWASA managing director AKM Fazlullah.
Chittagong WASA board member Asif Siraj, a journalist, deputy managing director (admin) Md Abdul Awal, DMD (engineering) Ratan Kumar Sarkar and senior officials of CWASA were present on the occasion.
Terming it as his first business trip to Chittagong Mr. Hataeda said the JICA has been extending support to the first phase of the Karnaphuli Water Supply Project under implementation by Chittagong WASA (Water and Sewerage Authority) and will also continue the support to the second phase of the project.
JICA is not only the development partner of CWASA’s water supply project for five million people of the second largest city of Bangladesh but also engaged in the implementation of the outer ring road project of CDA (Chittagong Development Authority, he said adding that the JICA is extending support to the communication and health sector.
Engineer Fazlullah said CWASA is responsible for the water supply and sewerage system in the port city but it could not meet people’s demand for water. The WASA expects to increase 60 million gallons of water by implementing the Karnaphuli Water Supply Project within April 2015.
