index5.jpgArmy alongside members of different law-enforcing agencies will be deployed in each phase of the upcoming Upazila elections to ensure smooth holding of the local-government polls. The Election Commission on Thursday sent a letter to the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division (AFD) in this regard, according to sources at the EC Secretariat.

The EC will hold a meeting with representatives of law-enforcing agencies, deputy commissioners (DCs), superintendents of police and election officials on February 12.

“The meeting was supposed to be held on February 6 but the EC had postponed it for unavoidable reasons,” one of the EC sources said, adding that 14 lawmen will be deployed at each polling centre while 15 at each sensitive one.

Besides, the EC will deploy 17 lawmen at each polling centre in coastal districts as well as some special areas.

As per schedule, the firs- phase election to 98 upazila parishads will be held on February 19 while the second-phase polls will take place in 117 upazila parishads on February 27 and third-phase polls in 83 upazila parishads on March 15.

The EC has planned to arrange election in five to six phases to 480 upazila parishads out of 487 before June.

The country is going to witness upazila election for the fourth time since its independence.

The EC had deployed army for five days during the third upazila election held on January 22 in 2009.
